FOI REF: FOI/2023/4974

You asked

I am interested in geographical data and statistics for backgrounds of perpetrator and victim related to grooming gangs in England from the year 2000 to date.

Please could you provide data/statistics for the amount of convicted perpetrators relating to grooming gangs specifically broken down by ethnicity of both perpetrator and victim for each case.

If unknown [perpetrator and victim for each case], then please specify unknown if perpetrators ethnicity primarily was not recorded/is unknown.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on victims and perpetrators of grooming gangs.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) has previously measured children's involvement with street gangs. The latest data published from the CSEW is for the year ending March 2018 and presents the number of children aged 10 to 15 years who are a member of a street gang or know a member of a street gang. The questions on gangs in the CSEW have undergone re-development and new questions will be added into the survey from April 2023.

Our Child victims of modern slavery in the UK: March 2022 bulletin brings together different data sources on victims of child modern slavery, including sexual exploitation, however this is not restricted to exploitation perpetrated by gangs.

Table 1 in the accompanying data tables presents the number of referrals of minors to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) by type of exploitation. Table 28 presents data collated from four of Catch 22's services (in London, the North West and Midlands) dedicated to child exploitation. This shows the number of children flagged as at high risk of trafficking and exploitation by service providers, by age, sex and ethnicity.

We also publish police recorded crime data on the number of crimes flagged as child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation in table 24 of our Crime in England and Wales: other related tables.

Police recorded crime data and data from the NRM is held by the Home Office. If you have any queries about these statistics, you can contact them via CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk or NRMStatistics@homeoffice.gov.uk.
