Statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland may be obtained from National Records of Scotland and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.
The attached tables provide relevant details from the 20111 Census for England and Wales:
Table DC2201EW provides breakdowns by ethnic group and religion
Table DC2101EW sets out complementary details on sex and age for ethnic groups
Table DC2107EW gives supplementary information on religion by sex and age
Each of these tables together with other information from the 2011 Census is available to download from the Nomis website.
Some guidance on specific concepts and definitions used in the tables is set out below. If required further information on census definitions, variables and classifications can be accessed.
Usual Resident - the main population base for outputs from the 2011 Census is the usual resident population on census day (27th March 2011). For 2011 Census purposes, a usual resident is anyone who, on census day, was in the UK and had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside the UK for less than 12 months.
Ethnic Group - classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background.
Religion - refers to a person’s current religion, or if the person does not have a religion, ‘no religion’. No determination is made about whether a person was a practising member of a religion. Unlike other census questions where missing answers are imputed, this question was voluntary, and where no answer was provided the response is categorised as ‘not stated’.
If you are interested in further census information we do provide a bespoke service which would enable you to commission special tables. Advice on how to request a table.
The Census Commissioned Tables team are responsible for estimating the costs and delivery times for any new commissions. In all cases any table that is commissioned will have to adhere to our strict statistical disclosure control process to ensure that there is no risk of disclosing personal information in the table.
