You asked

I wish to find out the estimated population of the area of Cogan, located in Penarth, Wales.

A postcode in the area I am requesting is CF64 2NS. (In-case you require this to locate the area).

The most recent information would be of best use, however any information dating back to around 2010 would be greatly appreciated.

If the information for Cogan alone is not available. May I request the estimated population of the Penarth area, Wales. as this would be the next best thing.

Thank you for your request.

The best option to find what you are looking for would be to build the file using Nomis. If you have not seen this before, please see the following instructions, below:

On the Nomis homepage hover the 'Data downloads' box, then click 'Query data'. Then click 'Population Estimates/Projections' and select the 'Population estimates - small area based by single year of age - England and Wales (2011 to 2019)'. This dataset is based on the ONS' Population estimates for the UK.

From the 'Make selections' box on the left-hand side of the screen select the specific variables required. For the 'Geography' selection, you can use the search bar to select for specific areas you're looking for, e.g. Cogan.

To check that these are the areas you're looking for, you can click on the icon to the right of the selection (which looks like a map of the UK) to generate a map of that area. Then check the tick box of that selection to include in your dataset.

Alternatively, when you're in the 'Geography' section, you can click on 'map' to generate an interactive map of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Using this map, 'drill' down into finer geographic levels by either clicking on the 'Drill' button (to the right of the geographies in the table), or by double-clicking on the area on the map.

Once 'drilled' down to the required areas, hover over that area on the map; the top-right corner of the map will show the name or code for that area. To 'select' that area, tick the box of the corresponding name or code as listed in the table to the left of the map.

Once the required area is selected, adjust other variables using the 'Make selections' box. For population data for 2011-2019 (inclusive), click 'tick all' in the 'Date' selection. When the required variables have been selected, download the table using the 'Download Data' link under 'Get your data'. Please note that we do not hold population.

For mid-2010 population estimates for smaller areas, please see this article , the datasets for which can be found here.

We hope the above instructions provides you with enough information so you can use Nomis to produce the datasets or tables that you may require. However, should you require anything further, or need any assistance with using our NOMIS tool, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at pop.info@ons.gov.uk.
