Thank you for your freedom of information request regarding employment within the Scottish construction sector.

ONS publishes quarterly workforce jobs by region and industry which may answer part of your request. Workforce jobs (WFJ) are the sum of employee jobs (EJ), self-employment jobs (SEJ), government supported trainees (GST) and HM forces personnel (HMF). The workforce jobs QMI explains the concepts involved. It is important to note that the WFJ data are based on the number of jobs and not the number of people as one person can have more than one job. The Labour Force Survey (LFS), is an ONS survey which collects information mainly from residents of private households and is the preferred source of statistics on employment. However, the WFJ series, which is compiled mainly from surveys of businesses, is the preferred source of statistics on jobs by industry since it provides a more reliable industry breakdown than the LFS.

WFJ data for the construction industry (SIC section F) in Scotland is contained in the first link above. However, for a breakdown by employment component and gender please visit the NOMIS website links below:

WFJ SA contains WFJ broken down by EJ, SEJ and GSTs, but is totals only, there are no gender splits. These estimates are adjusted for seasonal variation.

WFJ NSA contains WFJ broken down by EJ, SEJ and GSTs and also has male/female full time/part time splits. It should be noted that these data are not adjusted for seasonal variation.

For demographic data on employees rather than jobs I would suggest the labour supply email inbox as a potential source of relevant data from the LFS and the annual population survey.
