You asked

I would like a breakdown of employed/unemployed people who stutter and the industries they are work in. I would also like to know their income and reason for inactivity for those who have identified themselves as 'inactive'.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request asking for data on the number of people who stutter broken down by economic activity (employed, unemployed and inactive), industry, income and reason for inactivity for those who identify themselves as ‘inactive’.

The main source for this type of information is the Labour Force Survey (LFS). Unfortunately, we do not hold any tables containing the specific information you have requested. The LFS questionnaire asks respondents about their main health problem but it does not specifically identify those with a stutter. However, it does allow us to identify people with a speech impediment. If this would be of interest to you then you can find statistics on the number of people with a speech impediment broken down by economic activity and sex for Quarter 1 (January to March) 2018 published on our website at the following link:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/disability/adhocs/008477numbersofpersonsbyeconomicactivityforsexandagegroupsbywhetherdisabledandbymainhealthconditionjanuarytomarch2018

If you would like this information further broken down by industry, earnings and reason for inactivity then we provide a bespoke service for LFS analysis. Special extracts and tabulations of data are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries should be made to the customer services team of ONS's Social Surveys Division (socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk). As this information is already available to you via this route, we considers that s.21(1) applies to this request and the information does not have to be supplied under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. S.21(1) is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

Another route would be to access the anonymised LFS datasets at the UK Data Service if you are able to run your own analysis. Details of how to access the data can be found here: http://ukdataservice.ac.uk/get-data/how-to-access.aspx

Data can be downloaded free of charge for non-commercial purposes but if charges are applicable, you will be notified during the ordering process. Further details are available at the following links:
