For the purpose of this response, staff members are defined as employees of the UK Statistics Authority and its executive arms, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR).

The number of miles travelled by staff members and associated value of reimbursements in 2022 to 2023 and 2023 to 2024, when using privately owned vehicles for business purposes are detailed below.

  • In 2022 to 2023, 2,891,373.50 miles were travelled with a reimbursement value of £1,271,350.23.
  • In 2023 to 2024, 3,274,317.49 miles were travelled with a reimbursement value of £1,428,573.58.

The majority of miles travelled, and value of reimbursements made relate to survey activities carried out by ONS Field Interviewers:

  • 89% in 2022 to 2023 and 91% in 2023 to 2024 of miles travelled.

  • 91% in 2022 to 2023 and 93% in 2023 to 2024 of the reimbursement values.

Incidents of road accidents, whilst driving privately owned vehicles for business purposes, which have been reported to us by staff members are detailed below. We have interpreted road accidents to mean road traffic collisions (as defined in the Road Traffic Act) and near miss/damage to vehicle incidents.

  • In 2022 to 2023 there were 19 road accidents reported.
  • In 2023 to 2024 there were 21 road accidents reported.
