You asked

Please supply whether the ONS have any statistical data on domestic violence specifically for Greater London that reflects the absolute cases of violent incidents vs non-violent abuse such as coercive control. This data will help us clarify our findings and these implications could be impactful on policy and policing. If you are able to provide us with any information for over the past year or two, it would be greatly appreciated for our work.

Thank you for your enquiry.

The latest detailed data we have published regarding victims of domestic violence in England and Wales are available in our Domestic abuse in England and Wales overview: November 2020 release.

The ONS publishes figures on the levels and trends of crime in England and Wales primarily based on two sets of crime statistics: the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime data.

Data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) on domestic abuse is mostly only available at the national level (by England and Wales) which you can find in our Domestic abuse prevalence and victim characteristics- Appendix tables. The survey at present does not produce published estimates of coercive controlling behaviour (see Developing a measure of controlling or coercive behaviour - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) ). Table 2 does however provide a breakdown of the estimated numbers of victims of domestic abuse aged 16 to 74, by type of abuse and sex, at the national level. The only table providing regional estimates (including the London Region) is Table 6 which shows prevalence of domestic abuse in the last year among adults aged 16 to 74, by household and area characteristics and sex.

Police recorded crime data shows controlling or coercive offences as well as offences flagged as domestic abuse-related which can both be found in Domestic abuse prevalence and victim characteristics- Appendix tables and Domestic abuse and the criminal justice system - Appendix tables. Unfortunately, neither of these will provide a breakdown of the data by violent and non-violent incidents, but is available for police force area (PFA).

Additionally, police recorded crime data on domestic abuse-related violence is collected by the Home Office. You may wish to contact them at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk about your request, as they may be better placed to assist.
