You asked

I would like to know how prevalent domestic violence is in black communities compared to their white counterparts in the UK.

I would also like to know how police react to this (how many arrests are made etc).

Thank you for your enquiry in relation to the prevalence of domestic violence in black communities compared to their white counterparts. Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you have specifically requested, but have provided some information below that may be helpful to you.

Table 8 of our ‘Domestic abuse: findings from the Crime Survey in England and Wales: year ending March 2018’ release provides estimates of domestic abuse broken down by ethnic group. These data are for adults aged 16 to 59 and are from the self-completion section of the Crime Survey for England and Wales. You can access this table here:

We do not hold arrest data broken down by the ethnicity of the victim. Data supplied by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) on the number of arrests made by the police for domestic abuse-related offences, by police force area, can be found in Appendix Table 24 of our ‘Domestic abuse in England and Wales: year ending March 2018’ release. These data are based on 39 police forces who could provide adequate data. You can access this table here:

HMICFRS may be able to help you further with your request, they can be contacted at contact@hmic.gov.uk

Our crime data relate to England and Wales only. Crime statistics for Scotland are published by the Scottish Government, and police recorded crime data for Northern Ireland are published by the PSNI and the Department of Justice (Northern Ireland).

If you would like any further crime-related information in the future, you can email us at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
