You asked

I require a detailed breakdown of domestic homicides across police force areas in England and Wales.

Specifically, I am requesting the following data:

  • The number of domestic homicides recorded in each police force area for the years ending:
    • March 2020
    • March 2021
    • March 2022
    • March 2023
    • March 2024
  • If available, I would also appreciate a breakdown of victims and offenders by gender for each police force area and year.

I have reviewed the open-source data published by the ONS, including national-level domestic homicide statistics and police force-level general homicide data. However, I have not been able to locate data that maps domestic homicides specifically to individual police force areas, aside from the entire period March 2021 to March 2023. This level of granularity is essential for my research.

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the information you have requested by single year. Data on domestic homicides is collected by the Home Office as part of the Homicide Index. We receive aggregated data for our publications. They may be able to provide you with further information you have requested. They can be contacted at the following email address: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

We do publish some domestic homicide data in the Domestic abuse victim characteristics, England and Wales - Office for National Statistics year ending March 2024 publication and accompanying tables for a combined three-year period. The most recent period covered is the year ending March 2021 to year ending March 2023. In this publication we provide the number of domestic homicides recorded in each police force area broken down by the sex of the victim (table 21).

In our Homicide in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics year ending March 2024 publication and the accompanying appendix tables, we publish single year data on the number of domestic homicides by the sex of the victim and principal suspect, however not at police force area level (table 34).
