Thank you for your enquiry,
Deaths from natural causes
Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
- The disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
- The circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
The official guidance on the completion of the Medical Certificate of cause of death (MCCD) advises "Never use 'natural causes' alone. The term "natural causes" alone, with no specification of any disease on a doctor's MCCD, is not sufficient to allow the death to be registered without referral to the coroner. If you do not have any idea what disease caused your patient's death, it is up to the coroner to decide what investigations may be needed."
Therefore, there will always be a specific cause of death assigned to the deceased MCCD.
We have published Deaths from natural causes by region and date of death, 1981 to 2015 - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) which holds all ICD_10 causes which are not external causes of death, for example an accident.
Underlying cause of death was defined using the International Classification of Diseases Ninth revision (ICD-9) codes 001 to 799, and Tenth revision (ICD-10) codes A00 to R99
You can obtain the same information from 2013 to 2021 by using our webservice, accessible via the following link: NOMIS webservice.
Please see the following instructions for using this service:

- Select the geography (England and Wales, regional, county or by local authority).
- Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.
- Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
- Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

Deaths by suicide in North Yorkshire
We publish suicides analysis by local authority, accessible via the following link: Suicides in England and Wales by local authority. Row 72 to Row 79 of Table 1 shows data for North Yorkshire up to 2021. Should you wish to obtain this information diaggregated by your requested age bracket, this can be obtain via our previously mentioned bespoke services. Please contact our HAPI Customer services team at Health.Data@ons.gov.uk to discuss this further.
For 2022, we publish provisional data as part of our Quarterly suicide death registrations in England. Figures are for deaths registered, rather than deaths occurring in each quarter. For deaths caused by suicide, around half of the deaths registered each year will have occurred in the previous year or earlier because of the length of time it takes to hold a coroner's inquest. For more information, see Section 8 of our Suicide rates in the UK Quality and Methodology Information (QMI).
Information requested from April 2022 to October 2022 for the requested age bracket for North Yorkshire only would produce very low figures, posing a significant risk of disclosure of personal information. We would therefore be unable to release the information in scope of this specific part of your request. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual, including those who are deceased. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified, Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
Deaths attributed to vaccine injuries
Please see the associated download with this request, which has been extracted from our NOMIS webservice. This provides annual deaths due to vaccines (ICD-10 code Y58, Y59 and U12.9) for 2017-2021 for North Yorkshire. Please note, NOMIS applies suppression to protect confidentiality. Therefore, numbers below 3 are suppressed to 0 and numbers between 3 and 5 are rounded to 5.
If you would like to look disaggregate by sex or age bands or look at other information. Please see the following instructions for how to use our NOMIS webservice:

Deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccination are reported in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis. Due to the small number involved we do not disaggregate by geography however in table 13 deaths by age are listed in 10-year age bands due to disclosure control.
For 2022 data for ICD-10 code Y58 and Y59 or to address the specific time period and age bands in your request, we can create a bespoke output. Special extracts of mortality data are available to order but are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources, and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy. Please note, we would be unable to include the geographical variable in this analysis, as this would constitue personal information owing to the low figures involved.
