You have made a Freedom of Information Request asking for the number of people, by age who have died from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) in Wales and the UK in each year from 2012 until present.
Underlying cause of death is coded using the tenth revision of the International Classification of diseases (ICD-10). The coding of sudden adult/arrhythmic death syndrome is not clearly defined in the ICD-10 and the term is not included in the alphabetical ICD index that is used to determine which code to assign. This makes it difficult to apply consistent coding rules.
In England and Wales we would normally code a death certificate which said "Sudden Adult Death Syndrome" to ICD 10 code R96. More information on the coding of SADS can be found on our website:
We do not publish cause of death figures for the UK as a whole, but figures for deaths by age, sex, cause and geography in England and Wales separately for 2013 - 2016 are available through our explorable data set:
https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73
For 2012, cause of death figures are not published separately for Wales. However total deaths by age, sex and cause for England and Wales combined, are available from table 5 of our deaths registered in England and Wales (Series DR) publication: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables
For the rest of the UK, mortality data for Northern Ireland is available here:
https://www.nisra.gov.uk/statistics/births-deaths-and-marriages/deaths
Mortality data for Scotland is available here:
https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/deaths
Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries should be made to:
