Thank you for your request.

1) The number of deaths recorded in WALES ONLY for the years 2015-2020 inclusive.

We have recently published annual mortality statistics for deaths registered in 2020, you can find figures for Wales for 2020 and years prior in column J of 'table 2b' in our deaths registered series.

2) The number of deaths within 28 days of a COVID-19 Vaccination (first and/or second) for WALES ONLY.

Unfortunately, we do not hold information on deaths within 28 days of vaccination for Wales, as the deceased's vaccination status is not provided on the death certificate and we have not obtained this data separately for Wales. The mortality data published by ONS are derived from the formal process of death registration. Deaths from COVID-19 may include cases where the doctor completing the death certificate diagnosed possible cases of COVID-19, for example, where this was based on relevant symptoms but no test for the virus was conducted. This differs to the data published on the GOV.UK website which are counts of all causes of death where a positive test for COVID-19 has been confirmed.

You can find the number of deaths involving COVID-19 (not restricted to first or second vaccination) in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset, these include figures for deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination. There are currently 3 deaths registered with the aligning ICD codes for this. However, should this change, they will be updated in this table. We are unable to publish these figures for Wales alone as this data would be assessed as disclosive. This is in line with our disclosure control policy: Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics.

3) The number of deaths recorded in WALES ONLY, where COVID-19 was the only cause of death, no comorbidities and with no pre-existing conditions.

ONS have also been producing Pre-existing conditions of people whose death was recorded with an underlying cause of COVID-19, this dataset can be found in section 8 of the Monthly mortality analysis bulletin. This dataset provides a greater insight into the leading pre-existing cause of death groups, for deaths occurring in England and Wales, in 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 that were due to COVID-19.

Please see 'table 1c, row 29' for deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause, but had no other pre-existing conditions recorded on the death certificate, Wales, 2020 to March 2021.

This publication will be updated quarterly. COVID-19 deaths involving pre-existing conditions is split by broad age groups between 1-64 and 65+. There was a total of 751 deaths in Wales 2020 and 404 deaths registered in quarter 1 of 2021 that were due to COVID-19 and were recorded without any pre-existing conditions.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
