Thank you for your request.

Cause of death is coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Version 10 (ICD-10).

Deaths where a cyclist is killed in a transport accident would be assigned ICD-10 codes: V10-V19 (Pedal cyclist injured in transport accident).

If the transport accident was specifically a traffic accident, one of the following fourth digit sub-divisions would be used:

  • .4 Driver injured in traffic accident

  • .5 Passenger injured in traffic accident

  • .9 Unspecified pedal cyclist injured in traffic accident.

As well as motor vehicles, some codes within this range include collisions with railway trains, pedestrians, animals, stationary objects and other pedal cycles, so the specific ICD-10 codes you would include in your analysis would depend on your definition of a 'road traffic collision'. Full names and descriptions of the specific ICD-10 codes within this range are available here:

http://apps.who.int/classifications/icd10/browse/2014/en#/V10-V19

The latest year for which mortality data is available is 2016. Deaths by underlying cause are available for 2013-2016 in our explorable dataset, where you can filter the data by the specific ICD-10 codes you are interested in:

For 2012, this information is available in table 5 of our Deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR) publication. This table only includes the causes where there were at least one death during the registration year:

We do not routinely publish statistics for mentions on death certificates. Very few death certificates are likely to record such detail as to whether the deceased was wearing a helmet or not. Therefore the number deaths of cyclists killed where 'no helmet' or words to that effect were mentioned on the death certificate is unlikely to reflect the true number of deaths of cyclists not wearing a helmet.
