FOI/2021/2787

You asked

Please supply how many women died of COVID-19 only while pregnant from January 2020 to January 2021.

We said

With regards to COVID-19 deaths, unless the pregnancy was the underlying cause or a contributory cause to the death, it will not be listed on the death certificate. Therefore, we do not hold all of the information requested.

We hold raw data showing deaths registered for women where a pregnancy-related cause is listed on the death certificate and is then coded as the underlying cause (the O codes in the International Classification of Diseases). Within these deaths, COVID-19 may be listed as a contributory cause (a mention). However, in order to provide this, we would need to create this as bespoke analysis via our bespoke services route. Information on deaths where a pregnancy related cause was the underlying cause of death, and COVID-19 as a contributory factor for 2020, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
