Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, they would be better placed to answer your query regarding deaths from COVID-19 in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Information on deaths due to or involving COVID-19 for 2020 are recorded weekly and presented in the downloadable datafile under Figure 2 of the following bulletin: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional. This publication is updated every Tuesday.

We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths where that illness was recorded as the underlying cause of death. We use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had that illness mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Therefore, the information requested for England and Wales is available in the third column of the following table, titled 'Deaths due to COVID-19' or in Column F of aforementioned downloadable datafile.
