You asked
Please could you forward to me the number of deaths per year in the UK and the same for the Greater Manchester area only from 2018 till 2021?
We said
Thank you for your enquiry.
UK deaths 2018 to 2021
We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In collaboration with these organisations, we publish headline mortality figures within our Vital statistics in the UK: births, deaths and marriages. The latest data available is 2020.
2021 data for England and Wales will be published in July 2022 as part of our Deaths Registered Series. UK data will be published in December 2022.
Registered deaths in Greater Manchester
Annual death registration figures for Greater Manchester between 2018 and 2020 are within the Deaths registered in England and Wales dataset. Table 2a (2020 edition) and table 2 (2018 and 2019 edition) includes deaths by usual area of residence.
Deaths Registered in Greater Manchester 2018 to 2020
Data for 2021 will be finalised in within our Deaths Registered Series in the Summer. This is to allow late registrations such as Coroner's Inquests to be included. Please see our Impact of Registration delays release for further information.
Currently, we publish provisional 2021 mortality figures for England and Wales in our Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board dataset, which may be useful to you.
In the tables labelled 'Registrations -- Pivot table' and 'Occurrences -- Pivot table', you can use the drop-down toggle and filter the selected areas you wish to view.
For clarity: The filter/drop-down on the pivot tables for 'All-causes' does not contain COVID-19 deaths. By default, both options are ticked. If you were to untick the COVID-19 option it would deduct from the total deaths, leaving you with deaths from all other causes. Additionally, if both were ticked and you unticked All-causes, it would leave you with the total number of COVID-19 deaths.
If this does not meet your needs, we can create a custom output. Information on deaths in Greater Manchester in 2018 to 2021, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
