Thank you for your request.
We are responsible for the production of mortality and births statistics for births and deaths registered in England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Figures for monthly deaths that were registered in Scotland can be found on the NRS website and Northern Ireland can be found on the NISRA website.
Our monthly publication Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales provides figures for all causes of death per month at several geography levels including country level, region, county, and local authority. This time-series covers 2006 to 2024 as well as provisional figures up to July 2025. As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
The information you have requested on all cause mortality and deaths to pulmonary oedema are available as annual data from our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice.
Instructions for use of this service:
- Select geography (England and Wales, regional, or by local authority)
- Select age (all ages, or five-year age bands)
- Select gender (total, or male or female)
- Select rates (all births, rates, or percentage of population, for example)
- Select ICD-10 cause (J81.0 for pulmonary oedema)
- Select format (Excel or CSV, for example)
We have not produced data on monthly numbers of deaths due to pulmonary oedema, however, we can create a custom output for this. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order, subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs. Please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk for more details on this service. As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only on payment, Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) also applies here.
We do not hold any data relating to deaths in the home attended by the police. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) might be better equipped to handle this element of your query as they publish annual deaths during or following police contact statistics. IOPC can be contacted by email: requestinfo@policeconduct.gov.uk.
