You asked

I would be very grateful if you could provide the following information:

Between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023:

1. The total number of deaths within the local authority areas of North Yorkshire (Scarborough, Selby, and Ryedale), and the City of York, and also in the wards of Wolds Weighton and Pocklington Provincial in East Yorkshire.

2. The number of deaths occurring in these districts which are referred directly to the Coroner by the Ambulance Service, GPs, or Police forces, GP surgeries or any other organisation outwith acute care trusts.

3. The number of deaths occurring in Care Homes, within these same districts.

4. The number of deaths occurring in patient's own homes within these same districts.

Please could we have total numbers and a breakdown per area listed above?

Thank you for your request.

Numbers of deaths registrations and occurrences by local authority and place of death (including deaths at home, hospital, hospice, care home and elsewhere) for England and Wales, 2022 to 2023, are available via the following link: Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. This includes information on whether the death was referred to a coroner by a doctor or by a registrar, but unfortunately no further detail is provided, so we do not hold the requested information broken down by particular organisation.

Information on the number of deaths by ward and place of death are available to order via our bespoke services route. This service is subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of cost, in line with the ONS Charging Policy. Such enquiries can be made to Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
