You asked

Please could I ask for data on the number of deaths from any cause in 2019. I would like this to be broken out by age (whatever age bands you may have available) and whether the person had a previous health condition.

So, for example, I would be able to see how many people in 2019, say, died between the age of 55 and 59, and how many of those people died with a pre-existing health condition, and how many had no pre-existing health condition.

Thank you for your request.

In order to provide the number of deaths with and without pre-existing health conditions by age for 2019, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests, we therefore consider this to be information not held. However, special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Please see the following mortality analysis we have available for 2019 by age and underlying condition, which may be of interest:

Deaths registered in England and Wales – 21st century mortality: This dataset provide annual data on the number of deaths registered in England and Wales by age group, sex, year and underlying cause of death, as defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision.

Deaths registered in England and Wales dataset: The 2019 dataset in this publication provides 2019 data on deaths registered by age, sex and selected underlying cause of death. Tables also provide both mortality rates and numbers of deaths over time.

The number of deaths by sex, age group, area of usual residence and underlying cause of death for England and Wales, 2013 to 2019, are available via our NOMIS webservice.

Please note, these publications and service present the number of deaths by underlying cause, so include deaths with and without a pre-existing condition. However, unfortunately there is no breakdown by pre-existing and no pre-existing condition.
