You asked

How many children have died of a 'Volvulus' and this is stated as cause of death on death certificate?

I would like to know the number of deaths for children aged 1-5 years of age between Jan 2020 - Dec 2020, Jan 2019 - Dec 2019, and Jan 2018 - Dec 2018 in UK/England.

Can you specify numbers for each year group please (example aged 1 - 2020 - 10 deaths, aged 2 - 2020 4 deaths etc).

Thank you for your enquiry relating to the number of children aged 1 to 5 years old who died with 'Volvulus' stated as a cause of death on the death certificate between January and December 2018, January and December 2019 and January and December 2020.

We are responsible for publishing mortality statistics based on deaths registered in England and Wales. Our statistics use the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) to define a cause of death, which uses code K56.2 to classify deaths with a cause of Volvulus.

The most recent annual figures published are for deaths registered in 2019. We do publish provisional weekly deaths registrations for 2020, however unfortunately, these do not contain a detailed breakdown of deaths by a full list of causes. Because of this we do not hold analysis showing the data you have requested for 2020.

Annual death registration statistics covering 2020 will be finalised and published in the summer of 2021.

Figures for deaths by age, sex, cause and geography in England and Wales separately for 2018 and 2019 are available through our explorable dataset in NOMIS.

Please see the following instructions for using this service: Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

Select Age – Data is available by 5-year age bands

Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example

Select cause of death – The ICD-109 code for the Volvulus is K56.2

Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

The NOMIS explorable dataset can be used to extract data for the underlying cause and age category you are interested in. The dataset will be updated for deaths registered in 2020 once finalised.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to disaggregate the data on NOMIS further by single year of age. In order to do this, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. Furthermore, if we were to create this information, this would produce low figures that would be considered disclosive.

If you have any questions regarding the above data provided, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk, and we will endeavour to assist.
