You asked

After 23 November 2022, how many deaths were certified as being attributable to vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia in the UK?

We said

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data come from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes, an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

There are no ICD-10 cause codes for vaccine-induced thrombosis or vaccine-induced thrombocytopenia specifically. The code for COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects in therapeutic use is U12.9, which would include vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia, but also includes other complications as a result of vaccination.

Provisional data on deaths registered involving COVID-19 vaccines, and directly due to COVID-19 vaccines, were published in 'Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales' in Sheet 14. July 2023 is the final edition of this dataset and the November 2022 dataset is available on the same page. The difference between figures in Sheet 14 of the latest release and Sheet 15 of the November 2022 edition show the total number of death registrations involving and due to COVID-19 vaccinations between the end of November 2022 and the end of July 2023.

Provisional figures of deaths registered in 2023 are available in our 'Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional' bulletin. More detailed figures by specific cause will be available when the summary statistics for deaths registered in 2023 are published in 2024.

If this information on deaths where the COVID-19 vaccine was either the cause or the underlying cause of death does not meet your needs, we may be able to create further information for you as a custom output. Information on specific causes of death, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order. These are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, in line with the ONS Charging Policy.
