FOI ref: FOI/2022/4208

You asked

Please will you provide me with the number of UK deaths where 'Sudden Adult Death Syndrome' or 'Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome' are mentioned on the death certificate for the year 2021 and, so far this year, 2022.

I'd also like the stats for 'Sudden Death, cause unknown' and 'Sudden Cardiac Death', for the same years previously mentioned.

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

For England and Wales, please see the following link to a previously answered Freedom of Information request which addresses some of your enquiry: Sudden Adult Deaths 2016 to 2021

2021 and 2022 data are still provisional and subject to change, this is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths which have been referred for Coroner investigation.

2021 data will be available on the 1 July as part of our Deaths Registered Series and 21st Century Mortality and NOMIS will be updated to include this information.

We have not completed analysis of 2022 data for these ICD-10 codes. However, this is available as a bespoke data request under our User Requested data service.

Bespoke data requests are outside of the FOI framework and are available to order from the HALE Customer services team and are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and subject to agreement to costs, where applicable. Please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk to access this service.
