FOI ref: FOI-2024-2108
You asked
I am making a Freedom of Information request for details pertaining to deaths with liver failure from the following years of 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, in the UK.
We said
Thank you for your request.
We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. For statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland you will need to contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Centre, respectively. Therefore, we do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK.
Please visit our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice to extract deaths where the underlying cause was liver failure. Data are available for deaths registered between 2016 and 2022. For deaths registered in 2023, please contact the health data team using the email address below.
- Select the geography (Country, region, local authority etc.).
- Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.
- Select Gender – Total or Male/Female
- Select rates – All deaths, mortality rates or percentage of population for example.
- Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). We would suggest using K711, K720 and K729 for liver failure.
- Select format (Excel or CSV for example)
Figures for deaths where liver failure was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate (ie whether it was the underlying cause or not, and so would be a greater number than the figures generated above from NOMIS) can be created as a custom output. Please note these services are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs in line with our charging policy..
