Mortality statistics:

We hold headline mortality figures for the whole of the UK, which are available via the following publication: Vital Statistics in the UK and in the following table. This publication provides information up to 2019. This publication is created in collaboration with National Records Scotland (NRS), who are responsible for Scottish mortality data, and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), who are responsible for Northern Irish mortality data.

All three organisations have produced blogs with year-end mortality figures for 2020. These have been summed together to provide the 2020 row of the following table. Please note, the figures for 2020 are provisional and are subject to change until we publish the Deaths Registered Series in the summer of 2021. This to allow time for late registrations to be processed because of coroner's inquests.

Deaths involving Influenza and Pneumonia:

We do not hold the requested influenza, COVID-19 and pneumonia data for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain this data for Scotland and Northern Ireland, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We do hold data showing deaths from COVID-19, and influenza and pneumonia in England and Wales. 2020 figures are available as part of our Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional 2020 publication.

As of 3 January 2020 to 1 January 2021 there were 80,830 deaths registered in England and Wales involving COVID-19.

From week ending 3 January 2020 to week ending 1 January 2021, there were 111,957 deaths involving influenza and pneumonia and 20,523 deaths registered due to influenza and pneumonia.

Deaths in England and Wales from influenza and pneumonia separately are available on our NOMIS Webservice from 2013 to 2019. This service will be updated with 2020 data once the data are finalised in the summer of 2021.

We also have the following user requested dataset, which provides deaths from influenza from 2001 to 2016: Number of deaths where influenza was the underlying cause of death or was mentioned on the death certificate, by five-year age group, England and Wales, 2001 to 2016

Further analysis of deaths from influenza and pneumonia in England and Wales would need to be created as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contacthealth.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
