Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. This is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

We have been producing the following publication in response to COVID-19: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales. This publication provides a greater insight into the leading underlying causes of death groups for deaths occurring in England and Wales between March and June 2020. Figures for COVID-19 deaths with no underlying health conditions are available on Table 5 of this publication.

From March to June 2020, there were 4,476 deaths involving COVID-19 with no pre-existing conditions in England and Wales.

Data for COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions disaggregated by age can be found in Table 6a, which we have also provided in the following table:

We have not further disaggregated the 0 to 44 years age bracket, as the numbers would be too low and would therefore be disclosive.

This publication has now been paused due to the decrease in the number of COVID-19 related deaths. Whilst the number of infections appear to be rising, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the months following June are very small and poses a disclosure risk, making it entirely possible to identify individual records.

We have not yet published an average age of death for COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions. However, this can be calculated from the table above using the following method:

Calculating mean average age of COVID-19 deaths with no underlying health conditions:

1. Define a representative age value for each age range group

2. Add up the total deaths for each age value

3. Add up the total deaths multiplied by age for each age value

In summary, the mean age = (age x total deaths for each age) divided by (total deaths for each age).

However, we have calculated the average age of persons that died for all deaths due to or involving COVID-19 which may be of interest: Average age of death (median and mean) of persons whose death was due to COVID-19 or involved COVID-19, by sex, deaths registered up to week ending 2 October 2020, England and Wales.
