Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or\ b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The applicable ICD10 codes are:

  • I67.1 Cerebral aneurysm, non-ruptured.

  • I60.9 Subarachnoid haemorrhage, unspecified

Our interactive webservice NOMIS provides deaths by underlying cause in England and Wales (including non-residents) from 2013 to 2022.

Please see the associated download from NOMIS, which provides total mortality (England and Wales, including non-residents) and the non-resident figure for I67.1 and I60.9.

Analysis of 2023 data has not been completed yet and will be published in July 2024. However, if you would like to request a specific data set from February 2020 to December 2023 using provisional 2023 data this can be completed as a bespoke request.

Special tabulations of mortality data are available to order from the HAPI Customer Services team. Such outputs fall outside of the Freedom of Information Scheme and are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy.
