FOI REF: FOI-2023-1536

You asked

I would like to request data pertaining to male patients who passed away with the recorded cause of death being Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism, Deep Venous Thrombosis, Blood clot or similar. The dates from 2018 to current date (or latest data available). I would like the data clearly defined in age groups, if possible, for England.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We hold mortality data, based on the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Numbers of deaths by underlying cause (ICD-10 code), sex, five-year age group and area of usual residence (subnational breakdowns are accessible), for England and Wales, 2013 to 2022, are available from the NOMIS webservice.

Below are some suggested some ICD-10 codes that are relevant to your query, and could be used when creating tables using the NOMIS service. However, there are several underlying cause of death (ICD-10) codes that mention bilateral pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, blood clot or similar. Therefore, you may want to use the ICD-10 online lookup to identify all codes that you consider relevant to your research.

  • I26 Pulmonary embolism
  • I80 Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis
  • I81 Portal vein thrombosis
  • I82 Other venous embolism and thrombosis
  • O22.3 Deep phlebothrombosis in pregnancy
  • O87.1 Deep phlebothrombosis in the puerperium
  • 088.2 Obstetric blood-clot embolism

Please follow these instructions to use the NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography - (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

If you have any queries about this data, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.

You may also find it helpful to know that NHS Digital provide a data linkage service whereby they can link study participants with their death records. NHS Digital provide a one-off matching service, or an ongoing matching service - for example by sending annual updates on the status of a cohort.  You can apply for this service via NHS Digital Data Access Request Service (DARS).
