We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. We have collaborated with these organisations to produce deaths from all causes for the UK from 1887 to 2020. These figures are available in the following publication: Vital statistics in the UK. This publication will be updated to include deaths for 2021 in December 2022.

We also publish weekly death statistics for 2020 and 2021.  This publication includes headline COVID-19 figures for the UK and information on other causes of death for England and Wales. Should you wish to obtain 2021 mortality data for Scotland and Northern Ireland, you may wish to contact NRS and NISRA. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Annual death registrations for England and Wales, for 2013 to 2020, are available to download via NOMIS. This is an interactive webservice that provides numbers of deaths and rates by underlying cause, age group, sex and area of usual residence.

You can also find annual numbers of death registrations by sex, underlying cause and five year age group for England and Wales, 2001 to 2020, in our 21st Century Mortality files.
