We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
We do not hold analysis of deaths involving all vaccinations in England or Wales for 2023. However, we publish deaths due to and involving the COVID-19 vaccination in table 14 of the Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales.
As of January 2023, which is the latest data available, there were 59 deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccination of which 51 are registered as the underlying cause in England from March 2020 to January 2023. In Wales for the same period there is 1 death registered where COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects in therapeutic use is the underlying cause. Using December 2022 data, these numbers are unchanged and therefore there were no deaths registered due to or involving this cause in January 2023.
February 2023 data will be published on 23 March 2023.
For deaths due to or involving other vaccinations, such as ICD-10 codes Y58 Bacterial Vaccines and Y59 other and unspecified vaccines and biological substances, we can create this as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order from the Health Analysis and Pandemic Insight Customer Service team. These extracts are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources, and agreement costs under the ONS charging policy.
Please note, 2023 data is in provisional format and is therefore subject to change to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths referred for Coroner investigation.
