Many thanks for your recent request.

You asked for each year 2014, 15 and 16, how many deaths have been recorded where synthetic cannabinoids are thought to have played a part in causing the death.

The following table is an extract of table 8 in the most recent drug related deaths bulletin:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsrelatedtodrugpoisoningenglandandwalesreferencetable

2016 deaths will be updated later in the year.

Regarding the following queries:

If possible please provide a breakdown of where the deaths occurred and the ages and sexes of those who died. If possible please also provide the exact cause of death as stated on the death certificate.

Due to the small number of deaths in each year, it is not possible to provide any more of a breakdown of the deaths as these could be disclosive.

Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries should be made to: mortality@ons.gov.uk. We recommend that you contact the Mortality Analysis team directly in order to discuss your data requirements in more detail.
