We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics. This is driven by information collected from the death registration. We unfortunately do not hold information on the vaccination status of the deceased, so are unable to answer your second question.

The information you have requested regarding meningitis deaths is available in part on our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice. Please see the following instructions for using this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, mortality rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
  • ICD10 Codes for meningitis: A17.0, A20.3, A32.1, A39, A40.3, A87, B00.3, B01.0, B02.1, B05.1, B26.1, B37.5, B38.4, G00, G01, G02, G03.
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

For further information, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

As noted, we do not hold information on vaccination status and so these user generated tables will only show the number of deaths - there is no option for breakdowns by whether the deceased was vaccinated or not.

The UK Health Security Agency lead on evaluating vaccination programmes. They may be of further assistance, and you may be interested in the report on their website: UKHSA Meningitis surveillance.
