We hold the following analysis Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales. Table 14 provides the number of deaths registered due to or involving COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects in therapeutic use. Table 15 provides an age breakdown.

As of 30 June 2023, there were 63 deaths registered where COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects is mentioned on the death certificate, of which 55 are registered as the underlying cause of death in England.

In Wales, there is one death registered where COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects is the underlying cause of death.

We produce statistics for deaths which occur in England and Wales, using the information provided during the registration of a death. Cause of death is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).

From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

  • the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death,

or

  • the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury.

The ICD-10 or leading cause codes for the above causes of death are:

  • Acute Myocardial Infarction - I21

  • Bell's Palsy  - G51.0

  • Cancer - Leading cause code LC02

  • Dementia F01 and F02 or Dementia and Alzheimer's Leading cause code LC18

  • Diabetes  - Leading cause code LC19

Leading cause codes group all ICD-10 codes as one, however if you would like specific forms of cancer, such as breast or prostrate these can be selected separately.

Please see the following instructions, which will allow you to output data from NOMIS:
