I am looking for the number of deaths where aspiration pneumonia was the cause in 2022-2023. If you cannot provide aspiration pneumonia specifically, then pneumonia would be appreciated.

Figures for deaths due to aspiration pneumonia and pneumonia that were registered in 2022 are available on our NOMIS webservice. Please see the following instructions for using this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).   
  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.   
  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female   
  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.   
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).   
  • ICD10 code for aspiration pneumonia = J69 
  • ICD10 code for pneumonia = J12 to J18 
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)    

Data for 2023 will be available in NOMIS in autumn 2024. 

In addition, weekly figures of deaths due to and involving pneumonia are available in our Deaths registered weekly bulletin. 

If you wish to obtain deaths due to aspiration pneumonia for 2023 before the 2023 data are updated on NOMIS, we could create a custom output for you via our bespoke services. Please note these services are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs in line with our charging policy.
