You asked

Please provide the data for Care Home Residents as follows:

  • Deaths involving Covid-19 (split by those occurring in the Care Home, in Hospital, or Elsewhere)
  • all other deaths (excluding Covid-19) (Split: occuring in the Care Home, in Hospital, or Elsewhere
  • a 2019 comparator (no comparator needed for 2021 data).

If possible I'd also like to see the deaths also split by main category of pre-existing medical conditions ie

  • Dementia and Alzheimer disease
  • Symptoms signs and ill-defined conditions
  • No pre-existing conditions
  • Ischaemic heart diseases
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases
  • Influenza and pneumonia

Finally could you also provide figures for deaths in recipients of domiciliary care in england (spit by died at home vs died in hospital). Together with a comparison for the prior year.

I'd like data based on date of death - although if it is easier to provide the date the death is registered will be fine.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality data for England and Wales. This is based on the information recorded on the death certificate at death registration. For Scotland and Northern Ireland data you will need to contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Centre, respectively.

Deaths involving Covid-19 (split by those occurring in the care home, in hospital or elsewhere) and All other deaths (excluding Covid-19) (split by those occurring in the care home, in hospital or elsewhere):

For the general population, provisional numbers of deaths (total deaths and numbers of deaths involving COVID-19) by place of occurrence (home; hospital; care home; hospice; elsewhere) for England and Wales, can be found in the following publication: Provisional deaths registered weekly. Please refer to the excel reference tables for this information.

For the care resident population, weekly deaths notified to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) are available in Table 4 of the following dataset: Number of deaths in care homes notified to the Care Quality Commission, England.

We now also publish provisional counts of the number of care home resident deaths registered in England and Wales, by region, including deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), in the latest weeks for which data are available.

Comparable data for 2019:

Registered deaths in care home residents for 2019 are available in our the following publication: Deaths registered in the care sector, England and Wales: 2019.

The above data split by pre-existing condition:

In order to provide deaths involving COVID-19 by place of occurrence and main pre-existing condition and by date of death, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, for the general population, provisional numbers of deaths involving COVID-19 by main pre-existing condition, for March to June 2020, can be found here: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales. We put this publication on hold when the number of deaths involving COVID-19 fell in Summer 2020, but, due to the subsequent increase, we will be releasing an update soon analysing data from July onwards. When a publication date is finalised it will be announced via our Release Calendar. This publication does not include deaths by place of occurrence, because numbers would potentially be disclosive when broken down to such a granular level.

The first release of finalised 2020 mortality data will be published in July 2021 via our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS. When a publication date is finalised it will be announced via our Release Calendar.

Domiciliary care:

The domiciliary care data provided in the following publication, Deaths involving COVID-19 in the care sector, England and Wales, was provided by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We do not currently hold updated domiciliary care data past what is presented within this release.

However, we will be publishing an update to our Deaths involving COVID-19 in the care sector, England and Wales, which currently has a provisional release date for May 2021. When a publication date is finalised it will be announced via our Release Calendar.
