We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We publish mortality statistics in England and Wales based on the information supplied when a death is registered.

Unfortunately, we do not hold information about burial or cremation, as this is not supplied during the registration of a death.

Cremation statistics are available online from the cremation society of Great Britain: https://www.cremation.org.uk/statistics

However, in case it is of interest, we publish provisional numbers deaths by local authority, England and Wales, for 2021 to 2022 in our latest weekly deaths publication.  You can access the dataset here. This publication is updated every Tuesday at 9:30am.

You can obtain annual numbers of death registrations by local authority for the period 2013 to 2020 for England and Wales via NOMIS.

Counts of deaths registrations for the period 2017 to 2021 are shown in the table below.

Figures are for persons usually resident in Barnsley, based on November 2021 National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) boundaries.

Figures are based on deaths registered between 2017 and 2021 and only include deaths that were registered by 31 Dec 2021, so figures for 2021 may be an underestimate due to registration delays.

Between week ending 7 January 2022 (Week 1) and week ending 21 January 2022 (Week 3) there have been 216 deaths registered in Barnsley.  Please note, figures for 2021 and 2022 are provisional and may be an undercount due to late registrations.

Using the NOMIS webservice, mortality data is available at regional, local authority and MSOA level, including further disaggregation by age and sex if required. Please note, to protect the confidentiality of individuals, small counts output for areas below region level are rounded; counts of 0, 1, and 2 are rounded to 0, while counts of 3, 4, and 5 are rounded to 5.
