Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

Causes of death are certified in most cases by a doctor, who records the sequence of medical conditions and relevant events leading to, or contributing to, the death, based on the deceased's healthcare records and other available information, such as laboratory tests or post-mortem investigation.

Some deaths are certified by a coroner who determines the causes of death following an inquest, based on all the available evidence. It is unusual for wider contextual factors such as the speed limit of a road to be recorded on the death certificate. Therefore, we do not hold the requested information. However, you may find the following related information useful.

Deaths due to road traffic accidents are routinely referred to a coroner for investigation therefore are subject to registration delays. The median registration delay for road traffic accidents registered in 2021 was 321 days. Our publication on the Impact of Registrations Delays provides further information.

Due to the delay in registrations, we are still in the data collection phases for 2023 to 2024. Because of this, analysis has not yet started, and we do not hold a figure for that reporting period.

You can use our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice to extract the number of deaths due to transport accidents in Wales for deaths registered from 2013 to 2022. Please see the following instructions for NOMIS:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – All deaths, mortality rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).   ICD10 Codes: V00 – V89

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Please note that this system will provide the number for deaths registered in each calendar year rather than the number of deaths occurring.

If you would like data showing road traffic accident deaths for the specific days requested in Wales, we would need to create a custom output. Information on deaths due to transport accidents occurring in the periods requested, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order. Please note these services are subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs in line with our charging policy.

Please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk for more information.

We do not hold information on the number of accidents or serious injuries. However, Welsh Government release these figures. The next publication for accidents occurring in 2023 is due to be released on 26 June 2024.
