You asked

I was wondering whether I would be able to get geographical data (regional, road type and road name) on where death by dangerous driving cases have occurred over the last decade.

If there are any other features that are seen often in these type of cases, that would also be great.

Would there be any data on the number of DBDD cases on smart motorways over the last decade?

We said

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality statistics are derived from information collected at death registration. Deaths due to road accidents and other external causes are certified by a coroner who determines the cause of death following an inquest, based on all the available evidence. It is unusual for wider contextual factors such as the name of a specific road or particulars around dangerous driving to be recorded on the death certificate. Therefore we do not hold that information.

Information on the number of deaths due to road traffic accidents is available in our explorable dataset in the NOMIS webservice

Instructions for use of this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)
  • Select age (all ages or 5-year age bands)
  • Select gender (total, or male or female)
  • Select rates (all deaths, rates, or percentage of population, for example)
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)
  • Select format (Excel or CSV, for example)

The ICD10 codes for deaths due to transport accidents are available.

Additional information on road traffic safety and accidents is available from the Department for Transport.
