You asked

Please supply the following information:

  1. Please supply how many people have died in Croydon University Hospital as a direct result of Covid-19/Sars-cov-2 alone, without any predisposing/contributing factors. Please supply the exact figure of deaths directly resulting from covid-19 between 1st January 2020 until the 1st June 2021 and have died not from anything else.
  2. Please supply the percentage and number of people with 'underlying health conditions' in the overall total
  3. Please supply the percentage and number of people without 'underlying health conditions'.
  4. Please supply the overall number of deaths without any contributing / underlying health conditions in the borough of Croydon.
  5. Please supply the percentage and number of people with 'underlying health conditions' in total in the borough of Croydon.
  6. Please supply the percentage and number of people without 'underlying health conditions' in total in the borough of Croydon.
  7. Please supply how many burials and cremations occurred in Croydon in the year 2020 on a monthly basis. Please present this information in a table, individually including the total for each.
  8. Please supply the total of burials and cremations that occurred in Croydon in 2020 in a table with comparison to the last five years (2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015).

COVID-19 deaths in Croydon University Hospital

Unfortunately, we are unable to publish data relating to COVID-19 deaths only in Croydon Hospital as it is considered personal information. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals or individual businesses as applicable can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

Deaths involving underlying health conditions in the borough of Croydon

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing COVID-19 deaths by underlying health condition for the Borough of Croydon. In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, COVID-19 deaths by underlying health condition for the Borough of Croydon may be available to commission as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. We can provide deaths by place of occurrence, all causes and COVID-19 for the Croydon area. This information can be found using our Customise my Data service or using the Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board which is updated every Tuesday.

The NOMIS webservice will also provide deaths in the Croydon area by ICD-10 code from 2013-2020.

Burials and Cremations

We publish mortality statistics in England and Wales based on the information supplied when a death is registered. Unfortunately, we do not hold information about burial or cremation, as this is not supplied during the registration of a death.
