Please provide daily deaths in the UK for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain this data from NRS and NISRA, they can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

The following publication, Daily deaths England and Wales 2015 - 2018, provides the number of death occurrences from all causes by day, month and year of occurrence, by 5-year age group, for England and Wales, from 2015 to 2018.

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing daily deaths from all causes for 2019 and 2020 for England and Wales. In order to fulfil this part of the request, we would need to create a bespoke dataset. The requested information for 2019 may be available to commission as bespoke analysis via our ad hoc service. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy. 2020 mortality data will be available to order as bespoke analysis once the data are finalised in the summer of 2021.

You may also find the following datasets of interest:

Quarterly mortality report, England: April to June 2019: This provides provisional death registration and death occurrence data for England, broken down by sex and age. Figure 4 of this dataset provides the number of death occurrences in England in April 2019.

Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional: This provides provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, by age, sex and region, in the latest weeks for which data are available. This includes the most up-to-date figures available for deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19).

This dataset allows you to see the number of provisional weekly deaths for England and Wales from the beginning of 2020, and each week of 2019 for comparison. However, these numbers are for death registrations as opposed to occurrences and are weekly rather than daily. The 2020 figures include COVID-19 daily deaths occurrence figures that you may find useful.
