You asked

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 can you please provide a breakdown of the registered daily deaths due to COVID-19 (as defined by deaths within 28 days of a positive test) for the past 6 months. Please identify the number of those who were vaccinated (double) and the number who were not vaccinated.

Please also provide the same breakdown for the number of new cases recorded each day.

We said

Thank you for your request.

ONS and Government Dashboard COVID-19 produced by UK Health Security Agency report and produce COVID-19 deaths in different ways and have different purposes:

  • The daily COVID deaths counts reported on the government's COVID-19 dashboard provides numbers of COVID-19 deaths within 28 days of a first positive laboratory-confirmed test. The COVID-19 dashboard daily deaths figures provide a vital early indication of COVID-19 deaths that occur after a positive test.

  • ONS weekly death registrations data for England and Wales, relate to the week that ended 11 days prior and are based on the cause of death reported on the death certificate, thereby not restricted to only deaths that showed a positive test.

We do not hold mortality data relating to deaths due to COVID-19 within 28 days of a positive test. Please contact UK Health Security Agency for this data. They can be contacted on enquiries@ukhsa.gov.uk

We hold the following analysis Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional which provides deaths registered involving COVID-19 daily by constituent country and region. Please see the "COVID-19 daily registrations tab" for this information.

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing a daily breakdown of COVID-19 deaths by vaccination status. To fulfil this request, we would need to create bespoke analysis involving complex data linkage, which we are not obligated to do under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Therefore, we do not hold this information.

However, you may find the following information related to your request helpful:

We have published Deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status, England: deaths occurring between 2 January and 24 September 2021

Table 1 shows a count of deaths involving COVID-19 and percentage of all deaths by vaccination status, England, deaths occurring between 2 January and 24 September 2021. Data is available weekly within this publication.

To note, these data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the PHDA covers England only.

A further update containing data up to 31 October 2021 will be published on 20December 2021.

Daily COVID-19 cases by vaccination status:

The information you have requested regarding infections by vaccination status is available from the UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency, previously Public Health England) COVID-19 surveillance reports. The relevant figure is on page 31 (9 December 2021, week 49).

Please pay attention to the note accompanying the figure. In the context of very high vaccine coverage in the population, even with a highly effective vaccine, it is expected that a large proportion of cases, hospitalisations and deaths would occur in vaccinated individuals, simply because a larger proportion of the population are vaccinated than unvaccinated and no vaccine is 100% effective.

Please also note that the figures are weekly cases rather than daily.

For more information, you can contact UKHSA via email at informationrights@ukhsa.gov.uk.

The Office for National Statistics COVID-19 Infection Survey is a household survey that estimates the number of people testing positive for infection and for antibodies in the UK. Our statistics refer to the number of current COVID-19 infections within the population living in private residential households. We exclude those in hospitals, care homes and/or other communal establishments. In communal establishments, rates of COVID-19 infection are likely to be different.

You may be interested in the COVID-19 infection survey technical article on positivity after vaccination and accompanying dataset. This includes the number of people who tested positive in the survey after one and two dose vaccination from 1 December 2020 to 31 May 2021. Alongside this, you may also be interested in our technical article on the impact of vaccination on testing positive and accompanying dataset, which includes the risk ratios of testing positive by vaccine exposure from 1 December 2020 to 14 August 2021. Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis of this information broken down by day.
