Thank you for your request.

Information on hospitalisations and vaccination uptake is produced by Public Health England (PHE) and published via the government's COVID-19 dashboard.

Latest numbers of deaths involving COVID-19 are available in our provisional weekly deaths publication.

You can find numbers of deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination (not restricted to the first or second wave) in Table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset. There are currently 4 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). The latest data available is for June 2021. The next update of this release will include data for July 2021 and is scheduled for publication on 23 August 2021.

We are currently working on analysis on all aspects of the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and mortality, including:

  • Information regarding deaths after vaccination from any cause.
  • Information regarding deaths involving or due to COVID-19 after receiving COVID-19 vaccination.

This requires complex analysis linking vaccination records to death registrations. The provisional release date for these publications is September 2021.

We have estimated the prevalence of long COVID symptoms using the national Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey (CIS). We have also linked healthcare and Census datasets to investigate health complications following COVID-19 infection. Information on these research methods is available here. Please note that these estimates are experimental. These are series of statistics that are in the testing phase and not yet fully developed.

The current Long COVID study is taken from self-reported data through the COVID Infection Survey, which went live in 2021 and therefore we do not have 2020 data. The next update of long COVID estimates hasn't been finalised yet but will be announced via our Release Calendar when they become available.

We have also produced a publication looking at the social impacts of long COVID, available here:  Coronavirus and the social impacts of 'long COVID' on people's lives in Great Britain: 7 April to 13 June 2021. Queries about this release should be made to policy.evidence.analysis@ons.gov.uk.

We able may be available to commission information about hospitalisations that went on to report Long COVID as bespoke analysis. This would be data from SNOMED codes which were introduced in December 2020, therefore it will not cover the entirety of 2020. Whilst GP's have the ability to backdate records to reflect Long COVID diagnosis, as yet this number is still very small. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contacthealth.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
