Death due to COVID-19

We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death as COVID-19 and we use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Our analysis Single year of age and average age of death of people whose death was due to or involved COVID-19 will provide deaths due to and involving COVID-19 for 2020 and up to September 2021. Data for October will be published on 23November 2021

In 2020, there were 73,766 deaths registered due to COVID-19.

Our analysis Deaths Registered Weekly in England and Wales will provide data up to 23 October 2021 and is updated every Tuesday. Using Deaths Registered weekly there have been 58,986 deaths registered due to COVID-19 in England and Wales.

Deaths due to Influenza and pneumonia 2020 and 2021

The information you have requested forms part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

    Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

  •       The ICD-10 cause code for Influenza is J09 - J11

  •       The ICD-10 cause code for Pneumonia is J12 - J18

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with deaths due to influenza and deaths due to pneumonia separately for 2021. In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis or table. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Deaths Registered Weekly will provide deaths due to influenza and pneumonia together up to 22 October 2021 and is updated every Tuesday.  

As of 22 October 2021, there have been 12,056 deaths registered as due to influenza and pneumonia in England and Wales.
