FOI Ref: FOI/2021/3150

You asked

I would like to request the nationwide admissions of patients with COVID-19 as their primary illness into hospitals for each month from January to end of June 2021 (not because they went in with another illness and tested positive on arrival) from January to end of June 2021.

I would also welcome a chart showing overall total national deaths from 2016-21, potentially with five-year average.

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunatley, we do not hold hospital admissions data. This data is held by NHS Digital. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at 0300 303 5678.

Our Deaths registered in England and Wales datasets include annual data up to 2020 on deaths registered by age, sex and selected underlying cause of death. The tables also provide both mortality rates and numbers of deaths over time. Please see table 1 within each spreadsheet to view the total number of deaths in each year in England and Wales.

We have also produced the following dataset 'Excess deaths in England and Wales, 2020'. This may be of interest as it includes deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020 and how they compared with the five-year average (2015 to 2019), based on finalised 2020 mortality data.

Death registrations data for 2021 are still being processed and have not yet been finalised. However, we do produce weekly provisional data for 2021, which can be accessed via the following link: Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional. Weekly mortality data for 2021 can be found in the 'weekly figures 2021' tab.

Finalised 2021 data will be published once death registrations for 2021 are confirmed. This will be published via our DR Series and NOMIS webservice in July 2022. This delay is to ensure we allow time to receive delayed registratons for deaths in 2021, so our final figures for this year are as accurate as possible.
