Unfortunately, the number of deaths where COVID-19 was the sole condition mentioned on the death certificate is not available at regional, postcode or MSOA because it would pose a disclosure risk whereby personal information could potentially be identified from the data.
Therefore, the information you have requested would need to be created as bespoke analysis, but even if we were to create this, it would not be possible for us to share this information. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) makes it an offence to release personal information. Personal information is any information held by the Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. This includes individuals that are deceased.
However, the numbers of deaths where COVID-19 was recorded as the sole condition on the death certificate for England and Wales, March to June 2020 can be found here: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales. We put this publication on hold when numbers of deaths fell in Summer 2020. However, due to the subsequent increase, we will be releasing an update soon analysing data from July onwards. When a publication date is finalised it will be announced via our Release Calendar.
