Re: Deaths Registered Weekly in England and Wales
The figures issued by ONS for the weeks ending: 30 October 2020, 6 November 2020 and 13 November 2020 state the number of registered deaths where:
Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) is mentioned;
Covid-19 is recorded as the underlying cause of death.
The figures do not include: details of the number of deaths recorded where the death certificate states Covid-19 as the cause (or underlying cause), and which do not mention any other cause or other medical condition.
For the sake of clarity, I am seeking information on the number of death certificates where only Covid-19, and no other cause or medical condition, is recorded on the certificate.
Please can you provide me with this information for the weeks ending: 30 October 2020, 6 November 2020 and 13 November 2020.

We produced the Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales publication in response to COVID-19. This publication provides numbers of COVID-19 related deaths by pre-existing condition and by leading cause of death groups, for deaths occurring in England and Wales between March and June 2020.
Of the 50,335 deaths that occurred in March to June 2020 involving COVID-19 in England and Wales, 45,859 (91.1%) had at least one pre-existing condition, while 4,476 (8.9%) had none. COVID-19 deaths where there was no pre-existing condition between March and June 2020 can be found in Table 5 of the publication.
Please note, this publication has now been paused. Therefore, in order to provide an update of this information, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, public authorities are not obligated to create information in response to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.
However, since July, we have been producing the following publication, which has leading causes of death on a monthly basis: Monthly mortality analysis in England and Wales.
The public demand for new data is always changing, so we are continually monitoring our response to the pandemic and reassessing what provisional data we release.
