You asked

I would like to request information in respect of individuals who have died from COVID-19 who's occupation was in construction.

I would like to know the number of deaths per month.

And the geographical location.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data in England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificates at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Occupations are defined using the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC 2010). Definitions of all groups and individual occupations can be found here: https://www.ons.gov.uk/methodology/classificationsandstandards/standardoccupationalclassificationsoc/soc2010/soc2010volume1structureanddescriptionsofunitgroups

In the response to the pandemic, we have produced Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation, England and Wales: deaths registered between 9 March and 25 May 2020, this publication provides an insight into deaths involving COVID-19 by different occupational groups.

There are numerous occupation codes attributed to the construction profession:

  • In table 4 you will find a breakdown of COVID-19 deaths by sub-major occupation groups, skilled construction and building trades.
  • Table 5 contains minor occupation groups which fall under the skilled construction and building trades group in table.
  • If you are looking for a specific construction occupation, I would suggest looking at tables 8 and 9. These tables contain COVID-19 deaths by individual occupation, sex and age.
  • Tables 10 and 11 detail COVID deaths in specific occupations by self-reported broad ethnic groups.
  • Tables 16 – 21 contains analysis focusing on England statistics.
  • Tables 22 – 24 contains analysis focusing on Wales statistics.

Unfortunately, we were unable to disaggregate this further by geographical location and month due to risk of disclosure, producing this data would produce small counts and poses a disclosure risk. This is in line with our disclosure control policy: Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics

In order to produce the requested data from June to present, we would need to create further analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk
