Thank you for your request.

ONS are responsible for the production of mortality data in England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from death certificates at death registration.

For mortality figures where COVID-19 was the sole cause of death, please see: Pre-existing conditions of people whose death was recorded with an underlying cause of COVID-19, this dataset can be found in section 8 of the Monthly mortality analysis bulletin. This dataset provides a greater insight into the leading pre-existing cause of death groups, for deaths occurring in England and Wales, in 2020 and the first three quarters of 2021 that were due to COVID-19.

Please see 'table 1a, row 28' (2020) and 'table 1, row 29 (2021)' for deaths where COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause, but had no other pre-existing conditions recorded on the death certificate, England and Wales. Table 1b represents these figures for England and table 1c figures are for Wales.

This publication will be updated quarterly. COVID-19 deaths involving pre-existing conditions is split by broad age groups between 1-64 and 65+. Please see figures for England below from Table 1b:

2020 Q1: 167 (0-64: 27 / 65 and over: 140) (Row 30)

2020 Q2: 5564 (0-64: 949 / 65 and over: 4615) (Row 30)

2020 Q3: 272 (0-64: 59 / 65 and over: 213) (Row 30)

2020 Q4: 2656 (0-64: 408 / 65 and over: 2248) (Row 30)

2021 Q1: 6483 (0-64: 1467/ 65 and over: 4598) (Row 29)

Following 2021 Q1, we have produced the analysis based on COVID-19 deaths that involved pre-existing conditions for England and Wales, rather than England only. This is due to the decrease in the number of deaths in this dataset which involved less common pre-existing conditions. This is in line with our Disclosure control policy. COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions for England only without age breakdowns can be found in Table 4:

2021 Q2: 334

2021 Q3: 1062

2021 Q4 is scheduled for release 21st January 2022 and can be accessed here.

You can find the number of deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset. There are currently 13 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). The latest data available is for deaths registered between March 2020 and November 2021.

We do not hold analysis for 1st December to 21st December 2021 regarding COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing condition and adverse reaction deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccine specifically. We can however create a custom output specific to your date range. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
