You asked

Under the freedom of information act please provide the same analysis provided in the following publication, COVID-19 deaths by age and occupation and age, March to December 2020, for the period when schools were open (i.e. 1 September-18 December 2020 only).

In particular I want to know if the age groups not vaccinated (20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70) will be at greater risk if schools return from 3 March.

Further given the data held on education staff, it should be possible to break this down further with analysis by sector (primary, secondary, nursery, FE, HE, independent, special schools) and by job role (classroom teacher, middle and senior managers, teaching assistant, lunchtime supervisor etc.)

Thank you for your enquiry.

We have published the following adhoc, Provisional analysis of deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), by teaching and education occupation groups, among men and women aged 20 to 64 years in England and Wales in addition to our recent publication. This provides provisional analysis of deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), by teaching and education occupation groups, among men and women aged 20 to 64 years in England and Wales from 9 March to 28 December.

We have looked at when deaths involving COVID-19 for primary and secondary teachers occurred (date of death rather than registration) using more recent data. Most occurred between March and April of 2020 (a total of 53 deaths), following the general pattern of the first wave. A further 6 deaths occurred between June and August, with the remaining deaths (21) occurring between October and December. It is unlikely we would find statistically significant differences between these cohorts, due to the small number of deaths.

We are do not hold figures for those who have been vaccinated and work in the Education sector.  NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your enquiry. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.
