Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In our COVID-19 mortality publications, we use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring to deaths where that illness was recorded as the underlying cause of death.

We use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had that illness mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Deaths involving COVID-19, by age group, between Jan 20 - Oct 21

You can view our published figures in our weekly deaths dataset. Please download the 'Covid-19 -- Weekly registrations' table in the 2020 and 2021 datasets for weekly deaths involving COVID-19 by age. Data up to 24 December 2021 is available in this publication, which is updated every Tuesday.

Deaths where only COVID-19 has been on a death certificate, by age group, between Jan 20 - Oct 21

Every quarter we update the number of pre-existing conditions mentioned on the death certificate where COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death in broad age groups.

Between January and September 2021 which is the latest data available, of the 57,875 deaths due to COVID-19 in England and Wales 7,971 deaths had no pre-existing conditions mentioned on the death certificate (13.8% of deaths due to COVID-19).

October 2021 to December 2021 data will be published in February 2022.

Deaths by vaccination of any COVID-19 vaccination status where COVID-19 has been on a death certificate, by age group, between Jan 20 - Oct 21

We hold the following analysis 'Deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status, England'.

This shows analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 and all cause deaths by vaccination status that occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 October 2021 in England. The data are for England only, as vaccinations data for Wales is not yet available to be linked to the mortality dataset and the Public Health Data Asset covers England only.

Please note, these deaths are not attributed to the COVID-19 vaccination. This publication shows deaths by vaccination status.

If you are interested in deaths attributed to the COVID-19 vaccination (not restricted to first or second vaccination) these can be found in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset. There are currently 13 deaths registered with the aligning ICD codes for this.

Please note that these are deaths across all age groups since the rollout of the vaccination in December 2020 and there are no deaths registered under the age of 35. We are unable to release figures to by age as it would make the figures smaller which would be a disclosure risk. As individuals can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied. These figures have also been produced in line with our disclosure control policy: Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics.
