Thank you for your enquiry

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK. Should you wish to obtain this data from NRS and NISRA, they can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

However, we do hold the following analysis for England and Wales related to your request: Pre-existing conditions of people who died due to COVID-19, England and Wales - Office for National Statistics which provides deaths from January 2020 to December 2020 by two broad age groups in the dataset in table 2. This has also been pasted in the following tables. Unfortunately, we do not hold the age breakdown of this data requested. In order tor provide this for England and Wales, we would need to create bespoke analysis, which we are not obligated to do under the Freedom of Inforamtion Act 2000 (FOIA).

England

Wales

Quarter 1 data for 2021 data is available in table 2 of the publication.

Notes:
  1. Based on non-neonatal deaths due to COVID-19; see the Definitions tab for information on our definition of COVID-19.
  2. Numbers exclude one record with ordering anomalies that affect judgement on whether condition pre-existed.
  3. Figures for England and Wales (combined) include deaths of non-residents. However, all other geographical breakdowns exclude deaths of non-residents and boundaries are based on the most up-to-date information available at time of publication.
  4. Figures are for deaths registered in quarter 1 (January to March) 2021. There is a delay between a death occurring and it being registered; for more information see our impact of registration delays bulletin

Deaths caused by the COVID-19 vaccine in England and Wales

You can find the number of deaths involving adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination in table 12 of our Monthly Mortality Analysis dataset. There are currently 3 deaths registered with the aligning ICD-10 codes for this (U12.9). The latest data available is June 2021. This publication is due to be updated later in July 2021.

Due to the small numbers involved, we would be unable to release a breakdown of pre-existing conditions or age. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) which renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate.

In case it is also of interest, we are currently working on analysis on all aspects of the relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and mortality. This requires complex analysis linking vaccination records to death registrations. Once we have finalised these plans a publication date will be announced on our Release Calendar.
